Centre d’Art Contemporain

Founded in 1974 under the name Kunsthalle, the Centre was the first contemporary art institution in French-speaking Switzerland. It became a private-law foundation on June 1st 2010. Its programme includes a wide range of contemporary art: architecture, dance, design, drawing, new media, installations, music, painting, performance, photography, sculpture and video. Over 300 shows of Swiss and international artists have been put on. Joseph Beuys, Maurizio Cattelan, Dan Graham, Andy Warhol, La Ribot, Josh Smith have all exhibited here. Located since 1989 at the rue des Bains, in the Contemporary Art Building that it shares with MAMCO, FMAC and the Centre de la Photographie Genève, the Centre enjoys 1000 m2 of exhibition space over two floors, a movie theatre, an artist’ s residence, a project space and a bookshop. The Centre’ s goal is to discover innovative artists in Geneva, Switzerland and on the international stage and to give visibility to artistic approaches in various mediums (sculpture, painting, drawing, video, installations, sound, performance). Further, the Centre insists on creating new works, publishing quality art books and catalysing the public’ s interest in contemporary art.
