Centre de la photographie

The Centre de la photographie Genève (CpG) was formed in 1984 by eleven Geneva photographers for the artistic defence of photography. This question of the artistic aspect of photography having now had its teeth pulled, since 2001the CpG has developed an interest in the many means of photographic production, distribution and presentation. Interest in this mechanism grew up around the “documentary style”and the “visual c ulture”. Each year, the CpG presents 4 to 7 shows, of which some are extra muros, and publishes up to two photography books. The CpG ha s o w ned its o w n publishing house since 2007, the “Éditions Centre dela photographie Genève”, distributed since 2014 by “Les Presses du reel”. One focus is on innovation: the CpG now defines itself as a research laboratory in order to present and think out photography in its interactions with contemporary society. Since 2003, the CpG has also organised the 50JPG photography triennial (50 days of photography in Geneva) in collaboration with over 25 Geneva institutions. Since moving in 2007 into the Contemporary Art Building (BAC), this space has become the third actor on the Geneva contemporary art scene.
