« Laurent Marthaler Contemporary is introducing «An overwhelming chemistry», a group show featuring Nicolas Bischof, Christophe Bregnard, Niclas Castello, Crystel Ceresa, Hadrien Dussoix, Alex Gross, Bjoern Thomas and Elizabeth Waggett. This exhibition is characterized by the multiplicity of techniques, shapes, colours and emotions generated by the selected artworks. Indeed, by cultivating its own style, each artist is producing singular artworks with profound identity.
As an illustration, Niclas Castello readdresses the relationship between painting and sculpture with his Cube Paintings. The German artist literally destroyed his own paintings to create new artworks. Not only Castello explores processes of destruction and creation, but also ideas of space limiting its unique content. Equally important, Laurent Marthaler Contemporary is exhibiting Elizabeth Wagget, a young British artist and designer residing in New York City. Her hyperrealist artworks finalised with ethically sourced 24-karat gold leafs challenge the connection between human biased concepts of value and worth. Wagget’s complex approach raises ethical and cultural issues that are particularly relevant in our modern society. This is the first time that her artworks are exhibited in Switzerland. In addition, German artist Bjoern Thomas is displaying his «Gangsters» serie through the medium of photography. This serie depicts released prisoners from Los Angeles penitentiaries. These men are integrated into orchestrated settings in order to merge aspects of reality and fiction together. Rather than denouncing their past illicit actions, Thomas creates dramatic contexts analysing the composite and complex nature of criminality.
This introduction is only a fragment of the actual vast artistic material displayed at «An overwhelming chemistry». However, even if the plurality of aesthetics and narratives is unquestionable, there is harmony within our walls embodying this group show. In the end, what connects these artworks is that they reflect our values as a contemporary art gallery, always aiming towards the unexpected by breaking the rules of the game. Today it is our privilege to display artworks of such talent, both by emerging and high-class international artists. »
